# Residents protest as federal agents, police surround Pasadena home

Federal agents, police surround home in Pasadena neighborhood as residents and advocates protest

Residents and activists protested in a Pasadena neighborhood on Monday afternoon, where Pasadena police and other law enforcement officers surrounded a home and detained three people, a resident and a Houston advocate said. 

Lali Hernandez, who lives down the street, said she got a text from her cousin around 6:15 a.m. telling her that his house had been surrounded by federal agents. 

Hernandez, 23, said she arrived soon after and counted 10 law enforcement vehicles at her cousin's home. She said she didn't know what prompted the operation at the house but that it lasted 5 to 6 hours. 

Hernandez said the cousin who had texted her was not detained, but two other family members and a third person were. She said her father was detained by ICE several weeks ago while on his way to work, and she's now trying to support other members of her family while they wait to find out what happened to their loved ones. 

"I know what it's like go through this," she said. It's disruptive and life altering, she added. "They took the home's providers, and this is going to be a really big change for family."

Juliet Ortega, a community organizer with Houston Leads, said she arrived at a home on West Houston Avenue around 11 a.m. and saw 30 to 40 community members yelling to residents inside the home about their rights. 

Houston Leads is a non-partisan coalition of immigrant organizations that advocated for immigrants' rights, according to its website.

A video posted on Instagram by the Houston branch of the Party for Socialism & Liberation showed people yelling at law enforcement officers, who were taking video of the crowd behind yellow tape. 

Ortega said she saw ICE agents arrive shortly after noon with shields and helmets, approach the side of the home and detain three men.

The Houston Chronicle reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to find out if the agency was involved. ICE did not immediately respond. 

“It’s clear to us as community organizers that they're targeting the Pasadena, south Houston area right now," Ortega told the Chronicle. 

She said officers tried to talk with the home's occupants for some time, "but the community was saying, ‘Don’t let them in,’ and eventually we see that they’re walking three folks out."
